Based on the long-running video game series by EA Games, Need for Speed is a movie that was released in 2014. The storyline of the film revolves around a cross-country race from Los Angeles to New York City, with drivers from L.A. and New York facing off to be crowned "King of the Road". Need for Speed has received mixed to negative reviews from critics, who have described the film as "dated" and "bland". Two men, Dino Brewster and Sean "Mac" McAlister rob a truck during a street race in Los Angeles. They are both arrested by the police thanks to an anonymous tip from Dino's ex-girl friend, Julia Maddon. Dino is sentenced to prison for five years while Mac is released on bail. Later, Mac races against a man named Harry Yates, who severely injures Mac's co-driver after losing to him. To get his revenge on Harry, Mac enters into a cross country race from Los Angeles to New York City along with Dino who has been paroled from prison. After learning about Mac's plan, Julia blackmails him into letting her be his co-driver in the race, to which Mac agrees. To speed things up, McAlister steals a Porsche 911 GT3 RS from a dealership and enters the race. Need for Speed is about an illegal cross-country race and focuses more on action than racing in general. Dino and Julia must compete with each other to win the race and they drive in some of the most exotic cars including Ferrari 458, Lamborghini Sesto Elemento and Viper. The plot of the movie is very simple and very predictable. This film has an extremely weak plot as well as weak acting as well as weak dialogue. The story is pretty logical and can be predicted by anyone with a little experience about races which makes the film really boring to watch. Need for Speed has received around $10 million on a $66-million budget and it grossed $43 million in its first week at the box office, making it the first movie based on a video game franchise to surpass $100 million domestically. Despite its release during Fantastic Four's opening week, Need for Speed came out victorious, achieving the first win ever for a video game adaptation at the box office. In the end, it earned a total of $211 million worldwide at the box office. Need for Speed was released on DVD and Blu-ray on October 28, 2014. It was released on 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray on January 16, 2018.
A sequel titled "", directed by Scott Waugh and starring Aaron Paul as Tobey Marshall, was released in March 2017.
In 1994 DreamWorks acquired the rights to "Need for Speed" from Electronic Arts as part of a three picture deal including The NeverEnding Story III and Dragon Heart 2 .
